About us

The Association Familles Francophones de Bâle (AFFB) is a non-profit association founded in 2015 by francophone families in Basel. Our mission is simple: to help children and families grow, connect and thrive in French, right here in the Basel region.

While our heart is in the francophone community, we warmly welcome anyone who wants to learn and practice French. Whether you’re a complete beginner, a heritage speaker, or simply a family who loves the French language and culture, there’s a place for you here.

From toddlers to adults, in groups or one-to-one: we have a programm to fit every age, level and lifestyle.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to brush up your French, our small group classes offer a warm, dynamic learning environment, right in the heart of Basel !

  • Groups of 3 to 6 students
  • All ages welcome (4 to 99)
  • 90-minute lessons, once a week
  • 36 weeks per school year (no classes during school holidays)
  • In-person, at our Basel city center location

Pricing: CHF 70 per lesson, invoiced per semester, due in advance

Choose your focus: classic French (FLE) or exam preparation (DELF/DALF). Groups are formed based on level after registration.

A French programme designed specifically for students at the International School of Basel, held directly on campus, no extra commute needed !

  • Groups of 3 to 6 students
  • From EC3 to Grade 12
  • 90-minute lessons, once a week
  • 30 weeks per school year (no classes during school holidays)
  • In-person, on one of ISB campuses

Pricing: CHF 45 per lesson, invoiced per year, due in advance

One-to-one attention, at your own pace. Our private lessons are fully tailored to your goals, level and schedule.

  • Individual lessons (or bring a friend/sibling -> one invoice, you split the cost)
  • All ages welcome (4 to 99)
  • 60-minute lessons
  • At home or online, your choice

Pricing: CHF 88 per lesson, sold in packages of 10 lessons

Your lessons are built around you: conversational French, exam preparation (DELF/DALF), homework support, or anything else you need.

A joyful, French-immersive morning for little ones, with or without French background. Play, discover, and grow in French, every Friday morning in the heart of Basel.

  • Ages 2,5 to Kindergarten entry
  • Every Friday morning, 3 hours
  • 48 weeks per year (closed 2 weeks in the summer and at Christmas)
  • Drop-off (no parents required !)
  • At our Basel city center location
  • Open to all children, francophone or not

Pricing: CHF 55 per lesson, invoiced annually

Songs, stories, games and creative activities, all in French, all designed to spark curiosity and a love of the language from the very start.

The Association Familles Francophones de Bâle (AFFB) is a non-profit Swiss association founded in 2015 by francophone families in Basel. We are member of the international FLAM network and work in partnership with the Cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Land.

Absolutely. While our roots are in the francophone community, we welcome anyone who wants to learn, practise or simply live in French in Basel. Our Playgroup in particular is a wonderful entry point for families who want their children to grow up with French.

It depends on the programme! Our Small Groups, Private Tuition and Playgroup are open to all levels, including complete beginners. Our HSK/LCO and FLAM courses are designed for native French speakers. Not sure where you fit? Get in touch and we’ll help you find the right programme.

When you register, you indicate your current level. We then arrange a short placement interview to make sure you’re placed in the right group, or to tailor your private lessons accordingly.

We welcome new students at the start of each semester where places are available. Contact us to check current availability.

HSK/LCO (Heimatliche Sprache und Kultur / Langue et Culture d’Origine) courses are run in partnership with the Cantons of Basel-Stadt Basel-Land and are specifically designed for francophone children enrolled in local Swiss schools. Our other programmes (Small Groups, Private Tuition, Playgroup, ISB classes) are independent offerings open to a wider audience.

Yes, all our lessons and activities are conducted in French. This immersive approach is at the heart of what we do.

We follow the school holiday calendar and do not hold classes on public holidays. In the rare event of an unplanned cancellation, we will notify you as soon as possible and arrange a make-up session where possible.

Yes! Drop-off is part of the experience, it helps children settle into the group, build independence, and fully immerse themselves in French. Our animator is trained to welcome little ones and make the transition smooth.

Most of our programmes take place at our location in the centre of Basel. ISB classes are held on one of the ISB campuses. Private lessons can also be held at your home or online.

It varies by programme. Small Groups and ISB classes are invoiced per semester, in advance. Private Tuition is sold in packages of 10 lessons. The Playgroup is invoiced annually. All details are outlined in our Terms & Conditions.

Yes, a friend or sibling is welcome to join. Only one invoice is issued, and the families arrange payment between themselves. The rate remains CHF 88 for the 60-minute lesson.
